The Nintendo Powerfest was a contest held in 1994 to crown the top video game player in the United States. Competitions were held throughout the country, and top scorers were sent to San Diego to compete for the crown. Recently, a copy of the cartridge used in the competition was found, and an interesting (if under reported) event in the 16-bit era is revealed.

It is now officially 30 years since the 1990 tournament took place, and close to 30 years for the 1994 The Nintendo World Championships 1990 was a competition between the top scorers of the PowerFest 1990 events. The competition kickstarted off in Dallas, Texas on March 8 and went on until the December 7 finals in Los Angeles, California, touring a whooping 29 cities within the United States, and accounting for one of the largest gaming competition at the time.

After losing traction to the Sega Genesis, Nintendo came back swinging with a showcase of the SNES’ latest and greatest titles–on one special cartridge. Thirty-three of these cartridges were produced and sent to stores around the country for a massive tournament. There were 33 of these rough cartridges produced for the Nintendo Powerfest 1994 contest in 1994 and two survived to become collector's items. One was purchased by a collector for $12,000 in 2012. Other details about the game, and how it survived the purge, are shrouded in mystery. 6 Nintendo Campus Challenge 1991 (NES) The cartridges are similar to that of the Nintendo Powerfest in 1994 in that they come with miniature versions of Nintendo games, designed to offer players certain challenges to earn points.
